As countries like Turkey, Australia, and France ban social media access for children, Meta is trying to convince parents that its Teen Accounts proposition is safe. The company has announced new tools for parents to supervise child social media accounts, including a new Insights tab that shows the topics their teen has been asking Meta AI about.
Meta has also updated Instagram Teen Accounts with stronger safeguards defining age-appropriate content visible on the feeds of teenage users. However, the company warns that no system is perfect and that parents must continue to give feedback.
Despite the efforts of social media companies to respond to the bans, there is still a risk of VPNs being used to circumvent these restrictions. The Indian government is expected to propose a tiered approach to limiting social media access depending on age groups till the age of 18 years.
