Mumbai, Filmmaker Muzafar Ali has shared the story of how Asha Bhosle went to great lengths to bring authenticity to her iconic ghazals in the 1981 hit 'Umrao Jaan'. The singer, who passed away at 92, was in awe of Khayyam sahab and knew she was creating something special. She asked Ali to read her the book and wanted to become Umrao Jaan, exploring Lucknow and its culture.
Bhosle altered her singing style to add the required texture for the iconic ghazals like 'In Aankhon Ki Masti', 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai', and 'Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston'. Khayyam composed the music, and Shahryar penned the lyrics. She even immersed herself in Lucknowi cuisine, learning recipes from Ali's cook.
The 'Umrao Jaan' soundtrack was a career milestone that transformed Bhosle's image from a high-energy cabaret and pop hits singer to a versatile artist who could deliver classical ghazals. It earned her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, and she was emotional after winning the award.
Ali recalled Bhosle as a 'chanchal, shy, mischievous' person with a romantic and playful spirit. They had discussed collaborating on a Persian ghazal album, an idea that the singer was quite excited about.
