In a bold move, Asmik Grigorian, a renowned soprano, will take on the title role in Georges Bizet's 'Carmen' at the prestigious Salzburg Festival next summer. This decision marks a significant departure for Grigorian, who will be singing a role traditionally associated with mezzo-sopranos. Grigorian, 44, made the decision to tackle 'Carmen' now, rather than waiting until she's 54, citing her desire to experience the role while she's still in her prime. This move is all the more remarkable given that few sopranos have successfully performed the role live on stage. Grigorian will be part of a new production of 'Carmen' at the Salzburg Festival, which will feature Jonathan Tetelman as Don José, Kristina Mkhitaryan as Micaëla, and Teodor Currentzis conducting the Utopia Orchestra. Her performances will take place from July 26. Grigorian's bold move has been met with praise from her peers and industry experts. Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb believes Grigorian has the talent and fearlessness to pull off the role. 'She's very much of an old-school singer,' Gelb said. 'She's fearless when it comes to taking on new repertoire.' Grigorian will also perform at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, alongside a star-studded lineup, and will take on the title role in Pyotr Tchaikovsky's 'Eugene Onegin' at the Met in April. Her current season includes performances in Giacomo Puccini's 'Turandot' and 'Manon Lescaut,' and Richard Strauss' 'Salome.' While Grigorian's decision to sing 'Carmen' may raise some eyebrows, her peers believe she has the talent and presence to pull off the role. 'If you feel that you have the notes and you have the personality and you have the desire and you're a star like Asmik or you're a star like Ana María Martínez and a theater will give it to you, hallelujah,' soprano Lisette Oropesa said. Grigorian's first performance as Carmen is expected to draw significant attention in the classical music world. 'I started to live that role day by day a bit,' Grigorian said. 'I never know if I can sing something before I start to do it, so maybe it will be my failure? Who knows? Let's see.'
