Expectation is often the root of disappointment, and Backrooms is a prime example. The sci-fi horror film, directed by Kane Parsons, fails to live up to its intriguing premise.
The story follows Clark, a furniture store owner, who discovers a mysterious portal beneath his shop. As he ventures deeper into the strange dimension, the mystery only deepens, but the film rarely replaces cheap jump scares with anything equally compelling.
Parsons attempts to add emotional depth through Clark's psychiatrist, Mary, but these threads never fully come together. The film hints at layers beneath the surface, only to arrive at underdeveloped conclusions.
Backrooms ends up being both cryptic and dull, a disappointing effort from a new generation of filmmakers.
