Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was roughed up by locals in Sonarpur on Saturday while visiting families affected by post-poll violence. Stones, shoes, and eggs were hurled at him, and he was subjected to blows and kicks. Actor and TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh condemned the attack, calling it a 'shocking assault' on democratic values and a 'pre-planned' attack by those who 'stole the people's true verdict.'
Banerjee claimed that the incident was captured on camera and vowed to take it to the high court and the governor. The BJP's West Bengal president, Samik Bhattacharya, suggested that the incident was a result of locals' anger towards the TMC, which he claimed had 'tortured' them for years.
