Comedian Carlos Mencia, once a prominent figure in stand-up comedy and television, has been charged with 12 felony counts related to alleged tax violations. Prosecutors accuse Mencia of failing to report more than $8 million in earnings over several years.
According to the California Attorney General's Office, Mencia allegedly failed to report millions of dollars in income earned between 2019 and 2022, resulting in substantial unpaid state taxes.
Mencia, born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras, rose to fame through his Comedy Central sketch-comedy series 'Mind of Mencia' and became one of the network's most recognizable personalities.
However, his career has been marred by controversy, including accusations of joke theft and plagiarism. Despite this, he continued performing stand-up comedy across the United States.
Mencia faces 12 felony charges, including six counts of failing to submit personal income taxes and six equivalent counts for corporate taxes. He was taken into custody at his Los Angeles residence and is being held on $250,000 bail.
