The Union government has advised ZEE5 not to release its upcoming documentary series, Lawrence of Punjab, citing concerns over public order. The decision comes after the Punjab Police expressed apprehension that the show could pose a risk to peace in the state.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting communicated its advisory to ZEE5, stating that the documentary could hamper peace in Punjab and evoke strong public reactions. The ministry also cautioned against disseminating content that romanticises organised crime.
The show, scheduled to release on April 27, charts the rise of Lawrence Bishnoi, a dreaded gangster who first made national news after planning hits on Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.
The Centre's decision comes a day after Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking a ban on the release of the web series. Warring claimed the show glorified gangster culture and would send a negative message to the state's youth.
