The Recording Academy has introduced five new categories for the 2027 Grammys, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance, in a move to recognize the growing influence of global music.

Singer Sunidhi Chauhan sees the new category as a positive step, saying it's a huge opportunity for Asian musicians and global recognition is fantastic.

The timing of the announcement has also sparked conversation online, coinciding with BTS's reunion after all 7 members completed their mandatory military service.

However, the debate has centered around the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, with some arguing that Asia's music landscape is too diverse to be represented by just three genres.

Others have called the move 'tokenism', questioning whether separate categories would reduce the incentive to recognize Asian artistes in the main awards.

Other changes announced include allowing artistes to be submitted four times for Best New Artist, making digital-only albums eligible for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album, and awarding Grammy statuettes and achievement certificates to songwriters and composers.
