Imtiaz Ali is taking audiences back in time with his latest film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, a romantic drama set during India's partition and independence. In an exclusive interview, the filmmaker discusses the film, his idea of romance, and why being less active on social media is a boon for him.
Ali believes that love is timeless and doesn't change with time, but the way people express it does. He focuses on the personal story of the protagonists, Jiya and Kinu, to balance the Partition and romance in the film.
Main Vaapas Aaunga stars Vedang Raina and Sharvari as the two lovers, alongside Diljit Dosanjh, who couldn't promote the film due to work commitments. Ali says he's more interested in people who want to watch his film in theatres, rather than engaging with social media chatter.
The filmmaker hopes that Main Vaapas Aaunga will be 'main theatre mein vaapas aaunga', a film worthy of being watched in theatres. He believes that in this age, filmmakers must make movies that are good enough or enticing enough for people to come and watch.
Main Vaapas Aaunga will release in theatres on June 12.
