Jason Statham gets one of the meatiest parts of his career in Shelter, a new action thriller from Ric Roman Waugh. The film follows Mason, a lonely fugitive hiding away on a remote island in the Outer Hebrides, who is forced to care for an orphaned girl after a disaster strikes. As Mason tries to protect the girl, he is tracked down by MI6 and a group of assassins, leading to a series of deadly action set pieces.

Statham delivers the goods in the action sequences, which are often violent and grisly. However, the screenplay could have benefited from a more original formula and deeper character development. Despite its predictability, Shelter remains a steady and engaging thriller.

Shelter premieres on Lionsgate Play on June 12, starring Jason Statham, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Bill Nighy, and Naomi Ackie.
