Malayalam cinema has explored the Kerala folklore of Odiyan twice before the upcoming Prithviraj Sukumaran-Karan Johar film. The legend of Odiyan, a half-man, half-beast-like creature, has been a part of Kerala's oral traditions for generations.

In 2018, VA Shrikumar Menon's Odiyan, starring Mohanlal, was one of the highest-grossers in Malayalam cinema that year, but received mixed reviews. The film focused on the drama, portraying the clan near the end of its existence.

In 2025, Dominic Arun's Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan as a yakshi, featured Dulquer Salmaan's character, Charlie, an Odiyan who fights like a ninja and shapeshifts into a dog.

Now, filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan's Odiyan: The Age of Illusion, headlined by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Manju Warrier, and produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Supriya Menon, is set to explore the legend once again.
