Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy, who rose to fame with his portrayal of Monkey D. Luffy in the live-action adaptation of One Piece, is looking at India as a potential creative space. Having previously appeared in projects such as The Imperfects, the actor says he is open to exploring storytelling beyond borders, especially in a film industry as vibrant as India’s.

Expressing his admiration for Indian cinema, the actor was quick to point to the global blockbuster RRR, which saw actor Ram Charan and Jr. NTR in lead roles, as a standout. “I love RRR. That’s an awesome movie,” he tells us, adding that language or geography has never been a barrier when it comes to good storytelling.

“A good movie is a good movie. I want to do good films, so count me in,” says the 22-year-old, hinting at his openness to working in B’wood. “Bollywood, I’m waiting. Knock on the door.”

Reflecting on the massive global response to the Netflix show, the actor admits that while there is always hope for a project to connect with audiences, the reality of today’s crowded content landscape makes it hard to predict success.

“When you’re doing something, you always hope for the best, but things are difficult. Everybody is fighting for people’s attention,” he expresses, adding: “There’s so much stuff to watch, even on your phone, so I always keep my expectations a little bit low.”

That is precisely why the scale of the show’s reception came as a surprise. “I was very pleasantly surprised when people enjoyed it so much and started talking about it and sharing it with others. The organic growth of the fandom has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the journey,” he ends.
