A pilot was killed in a plane crash near a Rhode Island airport, just minutes from Taylor Swift's beachfront mansion.

The single-engine Cessna 172 aircraft went down while attempting to land at Westerly State Airport, with investigators believing the pilot may have been forced to alter course moments before the crash.

Witnesses described hearing a loud impact shortly before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

The pilot, a certified flight instructor in his 20s, was the only person onboard and was pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the crash.
