The Ramayana teaser, unveiled on Hanuman Jayanti, gave the first look at Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation of the epic. The big-budget film is the most ambitious Indian film ever made, with collaborations that exemplify the producer's vision. The teaser dazzled and shone, but felt like it could do with a little more soul.
Ranbir Kapoor's look as Lord Rama is perfect, bringing kindness and grace to the role. However, the teaser lacked dialogue from him, which would have been interesting to see. The simplicity of Lord Rama's tale is lost in the film's need to elevate the hero, resulting in a swaggering warrior rather than a humble leader.
The visuals are spectacular, with detailed sets and cinematography that complement the grand sequences. However, some character designs, such as the asuras, feel out of place and ripped the film of its core identity. The VFX in some battle sequences are also not up to par.
The teaser reminded me of the Avatar films, full of stunning visuals but lacking heart. Ramayana may be the best-looking Indian film made till now, but it feels a little too alien and sanitised. I hope the flaws are corrected and the positives built upon in future teasers and trailers.
