Raj Kapoor's fame transcended borders, and his grandson Nikhil Nanda recently shared a heartwarming story of how a Russian cab driver refused payment after recognizing Raj Kapoor's songs and a family photo.
Nikhil, son of Raj Kapoor's daughter Ritu Nanda, spoke about his bond with the legendary actor-filmmaker and how he truly understood his grandfather's popularity overseas during his time in the United States.
While studying at the University of Pennsylvania, Nikhil got stuck in a snowstorm and hailed a taxi. The Russian driver, who was playing Raj Kapoor's songs, initially thought Nikhil was joking when he claimed Raj Kapoor was his grandfather. However, after showing him a family photo, the driver stopped the car and didn't charge Nikhil for the ride.
Nikhil also recalled the advice his grandfather gave him when he was 12 years old, which has stayed with him ever since. Raj Kapoor told Nikhil that true wealth and reputation come from creating love and impact, and that he should strive to be remembered for his good deeds.
