US actor James Handy, known for his performances in Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, has tragically been stabbed to death at his residence in Los Angeles, according to police reports.

Handy, 81, was discovered unconscious in the front yard of his home in Tarzana, California, on Wednesday, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Michael Gledhill, 44, the son of Handy's girlfriend, has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder, as stated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Authorities responded to a report of "unknown trouble" after a caller contacted 911 and informed the police: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

The LAPD reported that on Wednesday, Gledhill flagged down nearby responding officers, informing them that he was the individual they were searching for.

Following his arrest, Gledhill was taken to Van Nuys Jail and booked on one count of murder, with his bail set at $2 million (£1.5 million).

Handy was born in New York and featured in a series of films and television shows spanning six decades, frequently in supporting roles or for a limited number of episodes.

His latest film appearance was in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, where he portrayed Jimmy, a bartender collaborating with the character played by Jennifer Connelly, who is Tom Cruise's love interest.
