Dhaka, Bangladesh - Former parliamentary speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was released from a high-security jail on Sunday after a court granted her bail in an attempted murder case linked to the July-August student-led protests of 2024.
Chaudhury, 59, was arrested on Tuesday by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch in connection with the case filed at Lalbagh police station.
She served as the first female speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad from April 2013 until September 2024 and was then elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
Chaudhury's bail was granted on a bond of Taka 50,000 following a hearing in an attempted murder case, with her lawyers arguing that there were no specific allegations against her while she was critically ill.
