Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton pleaded guilty to mishandling classified information in federal court. Bolton, a fierce critic of Donald Trump, agreed to a deal with prosecutors that includes a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and a $2.25 million fine.

As part of the agreement, Bolton must pay half of the fine within five days of sentencing and the full amount within 90 days. He is accused of sharing sensitive information with relatives for use in a memoir.

The Bolton investigation began before Trump returned to office in 2025, making it distinct from other cases brought against Trump critics.
