A 38-year-old Brazilian triathlete, Mara Flavia Araujo, died during the Texas IRONMAN triathlon race after reportedly drowning in the 2.5-mile swimming part of the race through the open waters of Lake Woodlands.

Araujo, who had been a triathlete for over a decade, had competed in IRONMAN and 70.3-distance events regularly and was also a journalist, fitness influencer, and part-time DJ.

She had nearly 60,000 followers on her Instagram profile, which remains active despite her death, and had worked for more than a decade in radio, TV, public-sector communication, press relations, and social-media management.

Araujo's official cause of death has not been revealed, but it has been reported that she was experiencing flu-like symptoms before the race.

Her sister, Melissa Araujo, confirmed that Mara Flavia Araujo had passed away during the race, and authorities are investigating the cause of her death.
