California held its primary election on Tuesday, with voters choosing candidates for governor, Los Angeles mayor, secretary of state and attorney general. Polls closed at 8:00 p.m. local time, and vote counting remains ongoing.
Election results (As of 2:30 a.m. EDT) showed that in the governor's race, Steve Hilton (R) led with 27.6% of the vote, followed by Xavier Becerra (D) with 25.5% and Tom Steyer (D) with 19.6%.
For the Los Angeles mayor position, Karen Bass has been projected to advance to the November general election runoff, where she will face either Spencer Pratt or Nithya Raman.
Notable early results in the US House of Representatives included Republican James Gallagher and Democrat Mike McGuire holding leads in different contests in District 1, and Democrat Jim Costa leading in District 21.
Incumbent Shirley Weber (D) was heavily favored to advance in the secretary of state's race, while incumbent Rob Bonta (D) held an early lead over Republican Michael Gates in the attorney general's race.
