Indo-Canadian groups have welcomed the passage of an anti-hate law by Canada's House of Commons, hoping it will prevent the display of violent pro-Khalistan imagery and protect sacred symbols.
The bill, Bill C-9, addresses hate propaganda, hate crime, and access to religious or cultural places, creating new offences for intimidation, hate propaganda, and hate crimes.
It also introduces 'protest bubbles' around places of worship, restricting demonstrations and the display of certain terrorism or hate symbols.
The amendments aim to address the problem of pro-Khalistan groups protesting outside temples and displaying overt symbols of the movement.
Organisations like the Hindu Canadian Foundation and the Canadian chapter of the Coalition of Hindus of North America have welcomed the bill, but also expressed concerns about growing Hinduphobia in Canada.
