Canada's ruling Liberal Party is expected to reach a majority in the House of Commons after three by-elections in mid-April, reducing the likelihood of a mid-term election.
The Liberals have gained four MPs without an election through defections, including the latest switch by NDP MP Lori Idlout, who represents Nunavut.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has called by-elections for three ridings on April 13, with two in Toronto considered safe for the ruling party.
Winning these seats will take the party to the majority mark of 172 in the House, which has a strength of 543.
The by-elections have also diminished speculation about a potential snap election in the spring, given Carney's growing popularity and the party's lead over the Conservatives.
Recent surveys have suggested the Liberals could garner over 200 seats if they chose to go to the hustings.
