Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney now heads a majority government after the ruling Liberal Party swept three byelections, securing a majority in the House of Commons.

The Liberal Party retained the ridings of University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest, taking their tally to 174 in the 543-member House.

Canadian media projected that the Liberal candidate for the Quebec riding of Terrebonne, Tatiana Auguste, had managed to retain the seat with a slim margin.

The Liberal Party's wins were courtesy of five defections from opposition ranks in recent months, four from the Conservative Party and one from the NDP.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Carney Liberals, stating that they did not win a majority government through a general election or the byelections, but through backroom deals with politicians who betrayed their constituents.
