The Illinois State Police paid tribute to a Chicago Police Department officer killed in the line of duty in a shooting at a Chicago hospital.

The shooting took place at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where a suspect brought in for observation opened fire, officials said.

The slain officer was 38 years old and a 10-year veteran, while the injured officer is 57 and a 21-year veteran.

A suspect is in custody and a weapon has been recovered, with an investigation underway.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling said the officers selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect the public every day.
