Cuba has condemned US President Donald Trump's fresh sanctions on the island as 'collective punishment' on May 1, as thousands marched outside the American embassy in Havana.

The sanctions target people involved in key sectors of the Cuban economy and officials accused of human rights abuses or corruption.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez called the sanctions 'illegal' and 'abusive', saying they demonstrate an intention to impose collective punishment on the Cuban people.

The measures come despite moves towards dialogue between the two countries, with senior US officials visiting the island for talks in April.

The sanctions have worsened Cuba's economic situation, which was already in stagnation, with supply shortages and power cuts becoming the norm.
