Eight members of a refugee family, who had returned to Afghanistan from war-hit Iran, were killed in a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck near Kabul. The sole survivor, a three-year-old boy, was pulled injured from the rubble and rushed to hospital.
The family, who had arrived in Afghanistan just 15 days earlier, were living in a makeshift tent when the earthquake struck. A neighbour, Mohibullah Niazi, had urged them to come inside, but they declined. The wall separating their plot from Niazi's home gave way, killing the entire family.
The earthquake also damaged five homes and 33 others, affecting 40 families across six provinces. The overall death toll from the earthquake is 12, with four people injured.
Afghanistan sits in one of the most seismically active regions on earth, with a history of devastating earthquakes. The country is still recovering from a 6-magnitude earthquake in August that killed over 2,200 people.
