Snapchat has been hit with an EU investigation over allegations it's not doing enough to prevent child grooming and the sale of illegal goods.
The EU probe, under the Digital Services Act, warns that the social platform may face fines of up to 6% of its global annual sales if it fails to meet high safety standards.
EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen said Snapchat has 'overlooked' the need for high safety standards, citing concerns over grooming, exposure to illegal products, and account settings that undermine minors' safety.
The European Commission suspects Snapchat's content moderation tools are ineffective in preventing the spread of information on illicit goods, including drugs and age-restricted products.
The Commission will take over a Dutch investigation into vape sales to children on Snapchat, with other areas of concern including Snapchat's age assurance tool and default account settings.
