Ex-FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has shed light on the similarities and dissimilarities between the Nancy Guthrie and Nancy Woodrum cases. Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of TODAY show host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her Catalina Foothills home near Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. Despite a month-long investigation, no suspects have been named, and Guthrie remains missing.
Coffindaffer pointed out that while there are similarities between the two cases, there are also key differences. In the Nancy Woodrum case, a worker at her home, Carlos Fuentes Flores, raped and murdered her in 2018. Flores left behind DNA evidence and was later convicted of the crime.
In contrast, the Guthrie case is still ongoing, and investigators are hopeful that DNA evidence will provide answers. Coffindaffer emphasized that nothing is off the table in the investigation, and the sheriff is optimistic that the DNA will lead to a breakthrough.
The Nancy Woodrum case involved a similar scenario, where the victim was reported missing after failing to attend a Bible study group. Her daughter discovered blood splatters and missing bedding, leading investigators to use geofencing technology to track down the suspect. Carlos Fuentes Flores was eventually caught and confessed to the crime, leading to his conviction and life sentence without parole.
