A tense hostage situation in downtown Bakersfield, California, ended after the FBI fatally shot the suspect following a 15-hour standoff.

All hostages were rescued safely and received medical evaluations at the scene.

The standoff began after a possible bomb threat was reported at a multi-story building housing a Chase Bank branch and a school district office.

The suspect barricaded himself inside one of the building's upper floors with several hostages before negotiations ensued.

Two hostages were released after authorities established phone contact with the suspect, and the FBI took control of tactical operations.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect or confirmed whether any explosives were found inside the building.
