French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that two French nationals, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, have been released from custody in Iran after serving three and a half years on spying charges.
The two were arrested in May 2022 while visiting Iran and were initially held in prison before being freed by Iranian authorities in November, but were not allowed to leave the country.
Macron thanked the Omani authorities for their mediation efforts and expressed relief that the two French nationals are on their way back home.
Their release comes amid a broader shift in Iran's treatment of countries, with some being treated more favorably than others.
It also follows the passage of a French-owned container ship through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked by Iran following US-Israeli attacks.
