Belfast actor Michael Patrick, known for his powerful theatre performances and a stint on Game of Thrones, has died at 35 after battling motor neuron disease.

He passed away on Tuesday, April 7, at the Northern Ireland Hospice, where he had been admitted ten days earlier.

Michael Patrick was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in February 2023 and had chosen not to undergo a tracheotomy, a procedure that would have given him an artificial airway to help him breathe.

His wife Naomi shared the news, saying he passed away 'peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.'

Naomi wrote, 'Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are. Michael was an inspiration to everyone who knew him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life.'

Patrick's career and legacy include co-writing the play My Left Nut with his writing partner Oisin Kearney and making history by playing King Richard in The Tragedy of Richard III at the Lyric Theatre, becoming the first actor with a disability to take on the role in Ireland.
