The search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, has entered its seventh week with no clear answers. A former FBI agent believes the criticism surrounding Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos may have lasting consequences for his career.
Nanos has faced strong criticism over how he handled the case, including allowing Guthrie's home to be returned to her family before all evidence was collected, and attending a University of Arizona basketball game early in the investigation.
A retired FBI agent told Newsweek, 'There is no way, I don't believe, for Sheriff Nanos to recover from the mistakes that were made in this case because of the public perception of those mistakes.'
Nanos has acknowledged his missteps and responded to recall efforts, saying, 'We're aware of the recall, and it's the right of the people. We'll always honor the will of the people, and that's what makes democracy.'
