Peter Magyar, a 45-year-old pro-European conservative-liberal leader, has won the Hungarian elections, defeating his long-time ally Viktor Orban in a historic feat.

Orban, who lost power after 16 years, conceded his defeat, saying he will continue to serve the Hungarian nation from opposition.

Magyar's Tisza party secured more than 53% of the vote, while Orban's governing Fidesz party received 38% support, with 77% of the vote counted.

Magyar, who was an Orban loyalist until a scandal in February 2024, has now taken the oath and will govern without a clear majority in parliament.

Magyar's relationship with US President Donald Trump has been a topic of interest, with the Hungarian leader praising Trump in the past for his leadership and willingness to stand up for open debates.
