Canada and India have begun formal negotiations towards a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), with initial meetings held this month.

The talks aim to expand bilateral trade to $70 billion Canadian dollars by 2030, with negotiators focusing on issues like non-tariff barriers, customs, and sanitary norms.

CEPA negotiations were initially dropped for an early progress trade agreement in 2021, but relations between the two countries have since improved after a reset in ties.

The agreement is seen as strategic for Canada, which risks losing preferential access to the Indian market and facing marginalisation in one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
