In the early hours of Sunday, a mass shooting near Indiana University injured at least nine people, according to authorities.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight along Kirkwood Avenue, a popular strip just off campus, where large crowds had gathered following the annual 'Little 500' bicycle event.

Police Chief Mike Diekhoff informed reporters that the violence began with a fight between two women outside a Five Guys restaurant, resulting in the suspects pulling out handguns and shooting several bystanders.

Two male suspects opened fire at around 12:25 a.m., injuring five women with gunshot wounds or bullet fragments.

Authorities stated that the motive behind the shooting is still unknown and that neither of the two women involved in the altercation was hurt.

Five of the victims, all women, suffered various injuries, with one 17-year-old hit by shards in her foot and ankle, and another 20-year-old victim hit directly by a bullet that travelled from her abdomen to her armpit.

The remaining victims were treated and discharged on Sunday, while one remained in the hospital in a stable condition.
