A 29-year-old man, Dilpreet Singh, has pleaded guilty to attacking an Indo-Canadian media host, Rishi Kumar, in Calgary, Alberta, in September 2024.
The attack occurred after Kumar, news director of Red FM Calgary, made comments on a broadcast about a firearms incident at the Dashmesh Cultural Centre.
Singh, who was unhappy with the content of the broadcast, confronted Kumar in the parking lot of the Rio Banquet Hall, where Kumar was leaving an election-related event.
According to the prosecution, Singh punched Kumar in the face, knocking off his glasses, and continued to hit him after he fell to the ground.
Kumar suffered blunt trauma injury to his eye, which required cataract surgery and could lead to retinal detachment, further cataract surgery, or glaucoma in the future.
Singh's guilty plea is likely to have 'potential immigration consequences,' his lawyer told the presiding judge.
