An earthquake in the Molucca Sea triggered small tsunami waves in northern Indonesia on Thursday morning, but no damage or casualties have been reported.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake was centered 127 kilometers west-northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province at a depth of 35 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tsunami waves were recorded at several monitoring stations, including in Bitung with a height of 20 centimeters and in West Halmahera with a height of 30 centimeters.

No immediate reports of damage, injuries or fatalities in Indonesia have been reported, and local disaster mitigation agencies and Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency had not yet released official assessments.

Residents in coastal areas were urged to remain calm, stay alert and follow official instructions as monitoring continues.
