Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that its navy struck a US oil tanker in the northern Persian Gulf, setting it ablaze. The alleged attack comes hours after Iran vowed to avenge the sinking of its warship, IRIS Dena, in the Indian Ocean.
The US government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. According to the IRGC, the American ship was hit by a missile in the north of the Persian Gulf and is currently on fire.
The alleged attack on the US tanker follows the sinking of the Iranian warship, which was attacked by a US submarine in waters near Sri Lanka. The incident killed 87 people and injured several others.
The IRGC has also claimed that they have 'full control' of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil and gas transit route, and will prohibit US, Israeli, and European flagged ships from using the route.
