The Iranian regime has mocked the US administration led by Donald Trump after the US Army Chief of Staff, Gen Randy George, was reportedly fired by US War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The Pentagon confirmed that George, who had more than a year left in his term, will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately.

General David Hodne and Major General William Green have also been fired by Hegseth, who has been making a series of sackings in the US military.

The Iranian embassy in South Africa posted images of a recent meeting of the US military top brass with some of them crossed out, captioned 'The regime change happened successfully'.

This is not the first time Iranian official handles have taken digs at the US on social media.

Gen Randy George's removal adds to recent upheaval at all levels of leadership at the Pentagon, including the firing last year of the previous chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Department of War did not give a reason for George's departure as army chief.
