Iran's Revolutionary Guards have taken 'de facto control' of the government, pushing President Masoud Pezeshkian into a 'complete political deadlock', a report by Iran International said.

The move comes amid an ongoing military conflict between Iran and the US, backed by Israel, and the loss of several senior leaders, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The IRGC has reportedly stopped presidential appointments and decisions, and put in place a strong security layer around the centre of power, pushing the government out of executive authority.

President Pezeshkian's attempts to appoint a new intelligence minister were blocked by IRGC chief commander Ahmad Vahidi, who maintained that key leadership roles must be chosen and handled directly by the IRGC until further notice.
