The sinking of an Iranian warship in Sri Lankan waters has left dozens dead and many more injured after a US torpedo strike.
The IRIS Dena, an Iranian missile frigate, was struck by a Mark 48 torpedo launched from an American submarine, according to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The incident highlights the escalating war in Iran and the US's willingness to use military force to achieve its goals.
The Dena was part of a group of Iranian ships that had been invited to participate in a biennial military exercise in India, but it was still trying to make port in Sri Lanka when it was sunk.
Sri Lankan authorities have taken in more than 200 Iranian sailors, including those from the Dena and another ship, the Bushehr, which reported engine trouble and was allowed to dock in Colombo.
The survivors will receive one-month visas on humanitarian grounds, but the fate of the Iranians in Sri Lanka's custody remains uncertain.
