Shamim Mafi, a 44-year-old Iranian woman, has been arrested at Los Angeles airport for allegedly brokering a deal worth over $7 million for the sale of weapons, including drones and bombs, between Iran and Sudan.
According to US Attorney Bill Essayli, Mafi faces charges of brokering the sale of 'drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition' between Iran and the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Mafi, who became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016, could face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
The arrest comes at a time when Sudan is in its fourth year of civil war and tensions between Iran and the US remain high.
