The air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty International Airport has been evacuated due to a burning odor emanating from an elevator.

Flights have been temporarily paused, with a ground stop in place until at least 8:30 a.m.

The incident comes as federal investigators examine a close call between an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 and a FedEx Boeing 777 on intersecting runways at the airport.

The Alaska flight was instructed to execute a last-minute go-around, narrowly avoiding a collision with the FedEx aircraft.
