North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has observed a high-thrust, solid-fuel engine test, hailing it as a significant boost to the country's strategic military capability.
The test indicates Kim's intent to modernize an arsenal of missiles capable of reaching the US mainland, according to state media.
The engine's maximum thrust is reportedly 2,500 kilotons, up from 1,971 kilotons in a similar test last September.
The test is part of North Korea's five-year military escalation program, aimed at upgrading 'strategic strike means,' including nuclear-capable, intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Foreign experts are divided on whether North Korea has overcome technological hurdles to develop a functioning ICBM.
