Iowa state Rep. Josh Turek has won the Democratic nomination for his state's open U.S. Senate seat, NBC News projects. Turek, a former Paralympic gold medalist in basketball, will face Rep. Ashley Hinson in the general election.

Turek lives in Council Bluffs with his wife Jarolin, an immigrant from Spain who is now a US citizen, and their children. He was raised in a working-class family and has four siblings who all competed in collegiate or professional basketball.

Turek's family has been instrumental in his life, with his mother introducing him to adaptive sports and his wife supporting him in his career. The two have a bilingual, multi-cultural household and share a few kids together.
