Pope Leo XIV concluded his 11-day African tour with a visit to Angola's impoverished northeast, where he condemned exploitation and corruption by the rich and powerful.
During a visit to the city of Saurimo, the Pope drove through the city under heavy security, passing by hundreds of locals dressed in colourful outfits and waving white scarves.
The city is close to Angola's largest diamond mine, Catoca, which extracts around 75 percent of the country's diamonds, but its riches mainly benefit the political and economic elite.
The Pope also visited a home for the elderly, underscoring the Catholic church's role in providing support in the impoverished area.
He met with members of the clergy to discuss challenges facing the church in Angola, including a lack of resources and the growing influence of evangelicism, witchcraft, and cults.
The Pope's visit to Angola was part of his 18,000-kilometre tour of four African countries, which he will conclude with a visit to Equatorial Guinea.
