Pope Leo XIV arrived in Angola on Saturday to condemn tyranny and the 'disasters' caused by the exploitation of natural resources in the oil-rich country.

During his visit, Leo delivered pointed warnings against corruption, the plunder of the continent's resources, and the dangers of artificial intelligence.

He condemned the 'social and environmental disasters' caused by rampant exploitation of resources, saying 'how much suffering, how many deaths, how many social and environmental disasters are caused by this logic of exploitation.'

Around a third of Angola's population lives below the international poverty line of $2.15 per day, according to the World Bank.

Leo also urged Angola not to be afraid of dissent, as authorities have been accused of stifling freedom of expression.

He regretted that his remarks had been interpreted as a response to criticism from US President Donald Trump, insisting he had no interest in debating the US leader.
