The family of Sheridan Gorman has spoken out after her brutal murder, condemning the policies and failures that allowed her killer to remain in a position to commit the crime.
18-year-old Gorman was shot dead by 25-year-old Venezuelan migrant Jose Medina-Medina last Thursday when she and a group of friends walked to the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach to see the Northern Lights.
Gorman's family is demanding that the case be prosecuted to the fullest extent of both state and federal law, with no gaps or shortcuts that could put others at risk.
President Donald Trump has weighed in on the incident, saying that it highlights the need for ramped up immigration enforcement efforts.
Medina-Medina is currently detained at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, undergoing treatment for tuberculosis and facing first degree murder and weapon charges.
