Cruz made the remarks in an interview with CBN News, a Christian TV channel, where he stated that the phrase has been used by far-right groups like Nick Sortor's groypers to assert Christian dominance over the Jews.
However, his comments sparked backlash against Cruz, who is a Southern Baptist Christian himself, with many on social media accusing him of being anti-Christian.
Cruz was raised Southern Baptist after his father converted to evangelical Christianity in 1975 and attended evangelical private schools in Houston.
He launched his 2016 presidential bid at Liberty University and worships at Houston's First Baptist Church.
