A tornado warning has been issued for Urbana and Champaign in Illinois by the National Weather Service. The warning is in effect until 10:30 PM CDT.

Mayor DeShawn Williams of Urbana warned residents to seek shelter immediately and be safe.

Scary visuals from the tornado that made landfall in Lena have caused concern among those in the areas under tornado warning.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign also comes under the tornado watch area, with safe spaces marked out in the college of engineering.

The university has announced that it will attempt to notify each area by phone if a tornado has been sighted in the area, but urges residents to use their best judgment when deciding to take shelter.
